Sentio University’s Innovation Lab
Sentio University is the only MFT program in California that makes its training methods, supervision tools, research, and clinical resources freely available to the global mental health community. The resources on this page are used by therapists, supervisors, and faculty at graduate programs around the world, and they represent a core part of what makes Sentio different from every other marriage and family therapy program in the state.
Most graduate institutions treat their training materials as proprietary. Sentio takes the opposite approach. We call it a culture of radical transparency: we publish our supervision model, share our Deliberate Practice exercises and training videos openly, release our AI research findings as they are published in peer reviewed journals, and make our research on Deliberate Practice in psychotherapy available to anyone who wants to learn from it. We do this because we believe the field of therapist training gets better when knowledge is shared, not locked away.
Sentio faculty and leadership are leading the development of best in class methods across several areas that are reshaping how therapists are trained. Our Deliberate Practice methodology, built on decades of expertise research and adapted for psychotherapy by our own faculty, is now the foundation of clinical skills training at programs across the United States and Europe. The APA published "Essentials of Deliberate Practice" series, authored by Sentio faculty, has become the standard reference for the field, with volumes covering therapy models from CBT to Emotion Focused Couples Therapy and beyond. You can explore the full collection on our Books by Sentio page. Our work in supervisor and faculty development, including the DP Supervision Residency, DP Certification Courses, and AI Certification Courses, is training the next generation of clinical educators worldwide.
When you enroll in Sentio's Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, you do not just join a graduate program. You join this community. You learn directly from the faculty who are creating these resources, you train alongside supervisors who have completed our intensive residency programs, and you become part of a network of clinicians and educators who are actively advancing how psychotherapy is taught and practiced. To learn more about the Sentio community and how to become part of it, attend an open house, request information, or read about the story behind Sentio on our About page.

The Therapist Throwdown
Register for the Therapist Throwdown here!
The goal of the Therapist Throwdown is to demonstrate how Deliberate Practice, showing your mistakes, and getting feedback can be done in a way that is RESPECTFUL, COMPASSIONATE, and FUN!
In our experience, too many therapists are embarrassed or fearful of showing their work and getting feedback on their mistakes. At Sentio University, we believe in creating a worldwide therapist training culture where trainees feel comfortable to experiment, show their mistakes, and get feedback, all in a context that is respectful, compassionate, and even fun! To help fix this, we are running the Therapist Throwdown - a playful, live competition where therapist trainees compete with videos of an actor playing a standardized client.
Sentio has hosted two editions of the Therapist Throwdown. You can see recordings the Live Final Rounds here:
