Spring Semester MFT544: Case Conceptualization & Treatment Planning, Tuesdays 9am-12pm PST
Tuesdays 9am-Noon Pacific Standard Time, Spring Semester 01/20/2026-04/10/2026 (12 three-hour classes)
Professor: Ines Amaro
The Case Conceptualization & Treatment Planning course trains students to formulate clear, personalized, and culturally responsive clinical case formulations that directly inform effective therapeutic interventions. The course presents multiple case formulation models, including transdiagnostic, cognitive-behavioral, and emotion-focused approaches, while grounding students in key concepts such as person vs. process diagnosis, treatment goals, therapeutic task selection, and symptom maintenance factors. Through a combination of theoretical instruction, clinical vignettes, and guided formulation practice, students learn to map out the emotional, cognitive, and relational dynamics that maintain client suffering. The course also covers the development of emotion-focused formulations that identify core painful emotions and unmet emotional needs, using tools such as process markers and Gestalt-based chair work. Finally, it equips students to develop culturally attuned formulations and integrate case management strategies, including referrals and community resources, into comprehensive treatment planning.

“I have really been enjoying the course. It's quite different from my grad program. In my program there were a lot of lectures without rich clinical examples, or certainly without videos. There was little practice. There certainly were occasions where we watched clinical videos, and occasions where we practiced, but that seems like it was a relatively small part of the program. Certainly nothing like Sentio.” - Audit Student at Sentio
