Sentio’s Safe & Ethical AI Training Models Featured in Psychiatric Times

As artificial intelligence begins to reshape how patients seek emotional support, the mental health field is facing a critical question: Are clinicians prepared for the age of chatbots?

In a recent Psychiatric Times article, "Clinician Competence in the Age of Chatbots," authors Allen Frances, MD, and Jill Noorily highlight the urgent need for clinical training to evolve alongside technology. We are honored that Sentio University’s proactive approach to this challenge was featured as a leading model for the future of therapist education.

Bridging the Gap in MFT Training

The article notes that while many traditional programs are slow to adapt, Sentio University’s MFT program has been at the forefront of integrating AI literacy into its curriculum.

Originally founded to improve clinical outcomes through Deliberate Practice, our program evolved as our supervisors noticed a growing trend: clients using chatbots for emotional processing before even entering the therapy room. Today, we equip our MFT students with the skills to identify when AI tools can safely aid treatment and—perhaps more importantly—how to double down on the human-centric competencies that AI simply cannot replace.

Elevating Clinical Supervision

A major highlight of the article is the role of the supervisor. As trainees encounter AI-related ethical dilemmas and safety risks in real-time, they need supervisors who are prepared to guide them.

Sentio’s Clinical Supervisor Training was recognized for incorporating AI safety and ethics modules into its certification curricula. By training the "trainers," we ensure that the next generation of clinicians isn't navigating this digital frontier alone. Our supervisors are taught to help trainees explore AI-mediated support with the same rigor and ethical care as any other clinical intervention.

Research and Accessibility

Beyond our degree programs, the article highlights Sentio’s broader mission to make AI education accessible to all mental health professionals:

  • AI Research Initiative: We are actively studying how LLMs are changing the therapeutic landscape and what those shifts mean for practitioner training.

  • Free AI Course: To support the wider community, we offer a Free AI Course for Mental Health Professionals, helping clinicians develop conceptual literacy and risk management strategies.

The Path Forward

As the authors state, "If this is a real part of some patients’ lives, then it must be a real part of how we train clinicians."

At Sentio, we believe that being a "future-proof" therapist means remaining curious, ethically grounded, and technologically literate. We are proud to be recognized by Psychiatric Times for our commitment to building a training model that protects therapeutic integrity while embracing the possibilities of a new era.
