The Clinical Research Project: Learn From Your Own Client Outcomes

At the Sentio Counseling Center, every client completes a validated outcome measure at every session, so by your final semester you have a detailed record of how your own clients responded to therapy. The Clinical Research Project turns that record into a study of your work. Guided by a faculty research advisor, you examine your outcome data alongside what happened in session, and you leave the program knowing your clinical strengths well enough to explain them to anyone, including an employer.

You complete the project in your final semester as part of Therapist Career Development, the course that prepares you to launch your career.

How the Project Works

  • You choose three clients you saw for at least three sessions: one who improved substantially, one whose change was modest or mixed, and one who got worse.

  • For each client, you interpret the progress graph from the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45) and connect it to what happened in the room: how you built the therapeutic alliance, the turning points, and your own reactions along the way.

  • You reflect honestly on each case: what you are proud of, where you felt stuck, and what you would do differently next time.

  • You close with an integrative reflection on the patterns across your cases, the clients you work with most effectively, and two or three clear goals for your growth.

Why Employers Care

Graduates have told us the project helped them get hired. It gives you concrete material for interviews: real outcome data from your own caseload, a clear sense of the clients you help most, and a plan for continuing to improve.

That experience carries straight into the workplace. Behavioral health organizations accredited by The Joint Commission are required to monitor client outcomes with a standardized instrument, and an associate who already knows how to read outcome data and learn from it arrives ready for that work.

Why It Makes You a Better Therapist

Without outcome data, even experienced therapists rarely notice when a client is getting worse, as the research on routine outcome monitoring shows. Studying your own results, including a case that did not go well, shows you exactly where to focus next. That habit of measuring and learning from outcomes is the core of feedback-informed treatment, and it works hand in hand with the Deliberate Practice at the heart of Sentio's training.
