Therapist Career Development: Your Job Search Starts in Class
The final semester of the Sentio MFT program includes Therapist Career Development (MFT564), a course built to carry you from student to working clinician. Experienced professionals who are working in the field give you hands-on guidance on networking, applying for jobs, getting hired and planning your career, and you put that guidance to work by applying for real positions while the course is still running. No other MFT program offers anything like it.
Several members of the Class of 2026 were hired into jobs they applied for during the course. Every member of that class was registered as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist within six weeks of graduation and working in the field within three months. Read about the Class of 2026.
Guidance From Therapists Who Are Doing the Work
Guest speakers join the class throughout the semester, each from a different corner of the field: private practice, group practice, community mental health, managed care, and related paths such as coaching and spiritual direction. They explain how they built their careers and what employers look for in a new associate, and they answer your questions directly. Sentio faculty then help you turn that advice into a plan for your own career, from your first associate position through licensure and beyond.
Apply for Real Jobs Before You Graduate
Your job search starts before you have a diploma. Over the semester you build and refine your resume and LinkedIn profile, write a cover letter, and develop a professional narrative that tells employers who you are as a clinician. Then you apply for open positions and bring the postings and your cover letters to class, where faculty check in on every step of your search.
Support continues after you graduate. Sentio assists each graduate in finding an associate position, with help on resumes and interviewing, and employers can post openings directly to Sentio's job board for graduates.
Prepare for the Law and Ethics Exam
The course also prepares you for the California Law and Ethics Exam, the first exam on the road to LMFT licensure. You work through a widely used exam-prep book, drill sample questions in class with Deliberate Practice, and finish with a timed 90-minute practice test.

“As a career-changer, what was most important to me was choosing a program that would have me feeling absolutely ready to practice when I was done and they did that. … I graduated with over 600 hours of direct clinical experience, including 100+ with couples, and have had no problem getting a job in private practice (TBH, no one cared about the school name, just that I had a ton of hours, a clear clinical identity and the skills to practice right away).”
Michele Carroll, Sentio MFT Graduate, Class of 2026

“As I interviewed for my first Associate MFT position, I realized how well Sentio had prepared me. The knowledge and clinical skills I gained through deliberate practice and supervision allowed me to draw on my training throughout the interview and played an important role in helping me earn my first Associate MFT position.”
Victoria Gonzales, Sentio MFT Graduate, Class of 2026
