The Truth-Seeker’s Guide for Comparing MFT Programs

The "MFT Industrial Complex" has a serious transparency problem. Most prospective students are met with a wall of stock photos—smiling people in sweaters sitting in circles—while Reddit is full of posts from MFT students complaining about their programs.

Every website looks the same, and many "ranking" sites are actually just paid advertisements in disguise. Prospective students are left with many unanswered questions, such as what does COAMFTE accreditation actually mean? What credentials should MFT faculty have? What about the quality of clinical supervision?

We built this comparison tool to help you cut through the marketing fluff and find out how these programs actually differ in the ways that matter for your future career.

How to Use this Guide

  1. Identify the Program: Enter the MFT program name and answer the questions based on what you’ve learned so far.

  2. Arm Yourself: Click "What Should I Ask?" to generate a custom list of high-value questions designed to bypass the marketing fluff and expose the actual clinical training.

  3. Schedule Your Interview: Set up a meeting or info session with the school's admissions team.

  4. Peel Back the Marketing: Use your generated questions to look past the "vibes" and get clear answers on how your investment in education will actually prepare you to be a highly-skilled therapist.

  5. Compare Your Findings: Use the information you gathered to decide if a program is truly a fit for your clinical goals, or if it's just another glossy brochure.

Questions to Ask This Program

This checklist is for your personal use in organizing program research. Select an option or check a box only after you have confirmed the information through direct inquiry, a class visit, or verifiable published sources. The "evidence-based features confirmed" count tallies the checkbox items in the Video Recording, Routine Outcome Monitoring, Supervision Quality, Training Methodology, Faculty Credentials, Transparency, and AI sections, which reflect the training practices most strongly supported by research. The radio-button sections capture important program characteristics that do not have a single "right" answer; weigh those according to your own priorities, career plans, and learning style.
