Best MFT Programs in California by Region and by Need

Published by the Sentio MFT program. Our own program is not eligible for any pick on this page, and it appears in the full directory below with the same fields as every other program.

Each pick follows one of two rules. Lowest total tuition ranks programs by the lowest total cost listed on our MFT program tuition page, at 2026-27 rates. A figure marked "~" is approximate; for most public California State University campuses it is our estimate from the CSU tuition rate and campus fees, so treat figures a few hundred dollars apart as about the same price. Programs with the same figure at the cutoff are listed together. Highest pass rate ranks programs by the share of first-time takers who passed the LMFT Clinical Exam in 2025, as reported by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences in Exam Results by School, among programs with at least 20 first-time takers. Ties go to the higher unrounded rate, then to the larger number of takers.

Graduates take the Clinical Exam only after 3,000 hours of supervised experience, at least 1,700 of them after the degree, so the 2025 rates mostly describe earlier graduating classes. The Board reports results by school, with separate rows for a few campuses, and not by online or in-person format. Our table of LMFT exam pass rates by program has the 2025 results for both exams and the 2024 Clinical Exam results for every program in our directory that we matched to a row in the Board's reports.

Regions follow the county of each campus, and a program counts in every region where it has a campus. Central California is Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne counties. Northern California is every other county, which takes in the Bay Area, the Sacramento region and everything north of them. Fully online programs are not assigned to a region; they appear under online or hybrid.

Programs accredited by COAMFTE, which California licensure does not require.

Apart from online or hybrid, which shows both rules, each need lists three programs by 2025 first-time pass rate, because at least three programs with that feature had 20 or more first-time takers.

Specialized tracks

These programs offer a named track, concentration or emphasis in art therapy, somatic or depth psychology, or culturally specific training. This is a list, not a ranking.

How this Directory is Built and Maintained

Source of the school list. Every program on the California Board of Behavioral Sciences approved-program list for the LMFT educational requirement is included, with no exceptions or omissions.

How tuition is calculated. Total cost is the published per-unit tuition multiplied by the unit count required for the BBS-eligible MFT degree, plus any program-specific required fees disclosed on the school's own website. Most California State University campuses charge a flat rate per semester and publish no program total, so their figures are our estimates of the cost for a California resident. Ranges in the format "$X-$Y" indicate that the program offers multiple tracks with different totals. A "~" prefix marks an approximate total, which is either an approximate figure published by the school or our estimate calculated from the rates the school publishes.

How unknown values are handled. Where a school does not publish a value, the field shows "unknown" or "Not listed." Apart from the cost estimates marked "~", we do not impute, estimate, or interpolate missing values, and we do not omit a school because data is missing.

How corrections are handled. Any school, prospective student, current student, or faculty member can request a correction by emailing mabundez@sentio.org. We respond within five business days. Corrections that are supported by the school's own published materials are made immediately.

Corrections do not affect ranking or inclusion. The directory lists programs alphabetically, in no ranked order, and the picks at the top of this page rank programs by only the two rules in the next paragraph. Requesting a correction, declining to respond to a correction request, or contacting the Sentio MFT program for any reason has no effect on whether a program appears, where it appears, or how it is described.

How the picks are chosen. Lowest total tuition ranks programs by the lowest total cost listed on our MFT program tuition page. Highest pass rate ranks programs by the share of first-time takers who passed the LMFT Clinical Exam in calendar year 2025, from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences report Exam Results by School for January 1 through December 31, 2025, counting only programs with at least 20 first-time takers; ties go to the higher unrounded rate, then to the larger number of takers. Each need first narrows the programs to those with that feature, checked against each school's own pages or, for accreditation, the COAMFTE directory. Regions and metro areas follow the county of each campus, and fully online programs are not assigned to one. The Sentio MFT program is not eligible for any pick.

Independence. Sentio University is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and operates its own MFT program, which is listed in this directory on the same terms as every other program. The directory contains no paid placements, no affiliate links, no sponsored entries, and no advertising of any kind.

How to Choose an MFT Program in California

Four practical factors decide whether a program fits your life and leads to a license, and the picks at the top of this page use the first three. Cost: total tuition runs from about $20,000 at public California State University campuses to more than $150,000, and there are more scholarships and financial aid options for California MFT students than most applicants realize. Licensing outcomes: the California Board of Behavioral Sciences publishes exam results by school every year, and each program's LMFT exam pass rates are worth checking before you apply. Format and schedule: evening, weekend, hybrid and online options decide whether you can keep working while you study. Practicum placement: some programs place you at a clinic and others leave you to find your own site, and a long search can delay the supervised hours you need for licensure.

Then look at how each program builds clinical skill, because meeting the BBS requirements tells you that a curriculum clears a legal bar but says little about how skilled a clinician you will become. Training built around real, performable clinical skills, rather than theory alone, is what lets you walk into your first session with confidence. Ask how much supervised client contact the program provides, whether it uses Deliberate Practice to rehearse specific skills with immediate feedback, whether supervisors review video recordings of your sessions rather than relying on your own account, and whether you learn routine outcome monitoring to track whether clients are getting better. Some programs also offer safe and ethical AI-integrated clinical training.

The purpose of these years is not simply to pass a board and collect a license. It is to become the best therapist you can be, so struggling therapy clients will trust you with the hardest moments of their lives. Hold your education to that standard. Reach for the ceiling rather than settling for the floor, and choose the program that will help you get there.

Note from the Field:
"Aim higher than the license. A degree gets you in the door, but skill is what earns a client's trust. Pick the program that takes your training as seriously as you do."
