Can an AMFT Work for BetterHelp, Talkspace, Headway or Alma in California?

Key points

  • Alma and BetterHelp accept only fully licensed clinicians. Alma's provider page answers "No" when asked whether a clinician can join with a limited license, and BetterHelp's California job posting excludes clinicians who require supervision.
  • Headway's associate route is a New York pilot, and Talkspace leaves supervision to the associate. Headway's help center lists no California option for supervisees, and Talkspace says it does not provide supervision.
  • The Board requires every California associate to be an employee or a volunteer. Board staff restated in August 2026 that an associate is not to perform services or gain experience hours as an independent contractor.

AMFTs and Online Therapy Platforms in California

As of October 2026, Talkspace and Headway describe routes for associate therapists on their own pages, while Alma and BetterHelp accept only fully licensed clinicians. Talkspace's associate track requires you to bring your own supervisor and says nothing about California's rules, and Headway's supervisory billing program is a pilot for group practices in New York.

For an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) in California, the Board of Behavioral Sciences' rules decide the rest. An associate may work only as a W-2 employee or a volunteer, may be paid only by the employer, may receive no payment from clients, and must have direct supervisor contact every week that hours are earned. Any platform arrangement has to meet those rules for the associate to practice within the law and for the hours to count toward licensure.

What Do the Board's Rules Require of an Associate on Any Platform?

The Board's rules require a California associate to work as a W-2 employee or a volunteer, whatever company the work is done through. The Board's FAQ for associates says, "All Associates must either be a paid W-2 employee or a volunteer employee," and the law allows an associate to perform mental health services only as an employee or volunteer. An associate may be paid only by the employer, may not receive any payment from clients or bill them directly, may have no ownership interest in the employer's business, and may not pay for the employer's space, equipment or other obligations. Opening an independent practice before licensure is unlicensed practice.

The supervision rules apply in the same way. Every week for which an associate claims hours must include at least one hour of direct supervisor contact in each work setting. When the supervisor is not employed by the associate's employer or is a volunteer, the Board requires a written oversight agreement between the supervisor and the employer, signed before supervision begins. If the employer is a private practice or professional corporation, the associate's registration must already be issued and must not be a subsequent registration, and the supervisor must be employed or contracted by the practice or be an owner of it. AMFT employment rules in California covers these rules in full.

Does Talkspace Accept Associate Therapists?

Talkspace has an associate therapist track, but its page does not mention California's rules or say whether associates join as employees or as contractors. The track requires "an active, associate clinical license (e.g., LMFTA, LAC, LCSWA, etc.)," a master's degree in social work, counseling or another behavioral science, "a supervising clinician and/or organization," and individual malpractice insurance. Talkspace says it does not provide supervision, so associates must bring their own clinical supervisor.

The page describes most of Talkspace's clinical network as 1099 contractors and says its information is "specific to our 1099 independently licensed contractors," so the terms for associates are not stated there. For a California associate, the Board's rules supply those terms. The work has to be W-2 employment or volunteer work, and if the supervisor you bring is not employed by your employer, a written oversight agreement between the supervisor and the employer has to be signed before supervision begins. An associate considering the track would need to confirm in writing who the employer is and how the arrangement meets those rules before seeing clients.

Can an Associate Join Headway in California?

Headway's help center does not list California for pre-licensed clinicians as of October 2026. Its route for associates is supervisory billing, which "enables a fully licensed clinician to bill insurance for services provided by a provisionally licensed mental health clinician (such as an associate or trainee)." Headway says the program "is currently in a pilot phase specifically for group practices in New York seeing Aetna and Cigna clients," and that it is working to expand to new states, more payers and solo providers over the next year. A supervisor or group administrator adds the supervisee through the group practice's account, and Headway's supervisee article, updated October 16, 2026, offers a waitlist form to clinicians whose state is not yet available. Headway's sign-up questionnaire includes the option "I'm not licensed yet," without further detail.

Because Headway's model runs through group practices, a California associate's terms would come from the practice. A group practice that is a private practice or professional corporation may employ an associate only after the Board issues the first registration, never on a subsequent registration, and only as a W-2 employee or volunteer with a supervisor who is employed or contracted by the practice or is an owner of it. Headway says it "does not determine or regulate compensation arrangements between supervisors and supervisees."

Does Alma or BetterHelp Accept Associates?

Alma does not accept associates. Its provider page asks whether a clinician can join with a limited license and answers, "No. At this time, Alma is only available to clinicians who are fully licensed." An AMFT registration is not a full license, so Alma becomes an option only after licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). The same page addresses clinicians as owners of their own practices ("Your practice is your own, and how you run it is always up to you"), a model the Board's rules close to associates, who may not practice independently or hold an ownership interest in their employer's business.

BetterHelp does not accept associates either. Its job posting for licensed counselors and therapists in California requires a "current independent clinical license that allows you to provide therapy without supervision" and states that "interns and clinicians who require supervision to provide therapy are not eligible at this time." The same posting describes its incentives as going to independent contractors. An AMFT practices under supervision, so BetterHelp, like Alma, becomes an option only after licensure.

Can an Associate Work for a Platform as a 1099 Contractor?

The Board's rules do not allow it. A California associate may perform mental health services only as an employee or a volunteer, and in August 2026 Board staff restated the rule in a legislative proposal on stipends and tax forms: "A trainee, associate or applicant for licensure is not to perform services or gain experience hours as an independent contractor." The proposal keeps the employee-or-volunteer requirement as it is.

The Board accepts a 1099 from an associate only in limited cases: reimbursement of a volunteer's actual expenses, or a stipend or educational loan repayment from a program designed to bring underrepresented groups into the profession or to improve recruitment and retention in underserved regions or settings. It may audit 1099 payments to confirm they were for one of those purposes. Payment for clinical work on a platform fits neither case. Platform work by a California associate therefore has to be arranged as W-2 employment or volunteer work with an employer, under a qualifying supervisor.

What Should an Associate Check Before a Platform or Telehealth Job?

Check the employment terms, the supervision arrangement and the telehealth duties, because the Board's rules place all three on the associate. Before accepting any position that involves online sessions, confirm these points in writing:

  • You will be a W-2 employee or a volunteer of a named employer, and you will receive no payment from clients.
  • Your supervisor is named, you will have at least one hour of direct supervisor contact every week you earn hours, and a written oversight agreement is signed before supervision begins if the supervisor is not employed by your employer.
  • The employer is not a private practice or professional corporation if you are still waiting for your registration number or hold a subsequent registration.
  • You know how the employer handles the telehealth duties the Board names.

The Board says its authority "does not extend directly to businesses or companies" that run online therapy platforms, but licensees and registrants who work for them "are still required to follow the telehealth laws." Its guidance names the duties: determining each client's location to make sure services can legally be provided there, having an emergency response plan, knowing the platform's policies on who keeps client records, keeping sessions and records secure and confidential, and verifying each client's identity. Telehealth rules for California therapists explains client location and consent in detail.

A Closer Look at One Program: The Sentio MFT Program

Programs differ in how much of their supervised practicum takes place online. In the Sentio MFT program, every student has a guaranteed practicum at the Sentio Counseling Center, an online counseling center that serves diverse, low-income clients and specializes in serving clients with trauma. Students begin seeing clients in their second semester, complete more than 400 supervised clinical hours before graduating, and have supervisors who review video of their sessions.

The program's first graduating class, the Class of 2026, finished in May 2026: 100% of its graduates were registered as AMFTs within six weeks of graduation, and 100% were working in the field within three months. The program is a 20-month, 60-credit Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy taught in weekly live online classes, with a short in-person residency in Los Angeles at the start of each semester.

Making Your Decision

An associate who wants to work online can look for that work inside an employer: agencies, clinics and, once your registration is issued, group practices that offer telehealth can employ associates as W-2 employees with a qualifying supervisor, an arrangement that fits the Board's rules. Platform policies change, and Alma's own answer is framed as applying "at this time," so check a platform's provider pages, and the Board's rules, before you apply. How to find your first AMFT job in California covers where associates are hired and what to ask before accepting an offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AMFT work for BetterHelp?

Not under BetterHelp's current terms. Its job posting for licensed counselors and therapists in California requires a current independent clinical license that allows the therapist to provide therapy without supervision, and it says interns and clinicians who require supervision are not eligible at this time. An AMFT practices under supervision, so BetterHelp becomes an option only after licensure as an LMFT. The posting can change, so check it again before you rely on it.

Can an associate MFT join Headway in California?

Headway's help center does not list California for pre-licensed clinicians as of October 2026. Its route for associates is supervisory billing, in which a fully licensed clinician bills insurance for a provisionally licensed clinician's services inside a group practice account, and Headway describes the program as a pilot for group practices in New York seeing Aetna and Cigna clients. Clinicians in other states can join a waitlist. In California, a group practice that is a private practice may employ an associate only after the registration is issued.

Does Talkspace hire associate therapists in California?

Talkspace has an associate therapist track that requires an active associate clinical license, a master's degree, a supervising clinician or organization, and individual malpractice insurance, and Talkspace does not provide supervision. Its page does not mention California's rules or say whether associates are employees or contractors. Under the Board's rules, a California associate must work as a W-2 employee or a volunteer, so confirm the employment terms and the supervision arrangement in writing before applying.

Can AMFTs join Alma?

Alma's provider page says no. Asked whether a clinician can join with a limited license, it answers, "No. At this time, Alma is only available to clinicians who are fully licensed." An AMFT registration is not a full license, so Alma becomes an option only after you are licensed as an LMFT. Because the policy is stated as applying at this time, check Alma's provider page again before you rely on it.

Can an AMFT be a 1099 contractor for a therapy platform?

The Board's rules do not allow it. A California associate may provide mental health services only as an employee or a volunteer, and Board staff restated in August 2026 that an associate is not to perform services or gain experience hours as an independent contractor. The Board accepts a 1099 from an associate only for a volunteer's expense reimbursement or for a stipend or loan repayment from a qualifying program, and it may audit 1099 payments.

Do California telehealth rules apply to associates who work for online platforms?

Yes. The Board says its authority does not extend directly to therapy companies, but licensees and registrants who work for them must follow its telehealth laws. Those duties include determining each client's location to confirm services can legally be provided there, having an emergency response plan, knowing the platform's policies on who keeps client records, keeping sessions and records secure and confidential, and verifying each client's identity.
