How to Find Your First AMFT Job in California

Key points

  • Medi-Cal's specialty mental health services can be delivered by associates. California's State Plan lists registered marriage and family therapists among the providers of those services, which each county's mental health plan provides or arranges.
  • Graduation timing decides which early hours count. Post-degree hours earned before your number arrives count only if the Board receives your application within 90 days of your degree date, your employer required Live Scan fingerprinting first, and the job is outside a private practice or professional corporation.
  • Every associate job must be employee or volunteer work with a qualifying supervisor. The Board does not allow associates to work as independent contractors, and every week of credited hours needs direct supervisor contact in each work setting.

Finding Your First AMFT Job in California

A first job as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) in California has to be an employee or volunteer position with a supervisor who meets the Board of Behavioral Sciences' rules, and the settings open to associates include county mental health departments and the agencies that provide services for them, community clinics and health centers, schools, nonprofit agencies and group practices. Before you start, an employer needs to confirm that you either hold an AMFT registration or can begin under the 90-day rule, that a qualifying supervisor is in place, and that the position meets the Board's rules on employment and setting.

Because of the 90-day rule, the search starts before graduation. Hours you earn after your degree and before your registration number arrives count only if the Board receives your registration application within 90 days of your degree award date and your employer has you complete Live Scan fingerprinting before you begin, so a job offer, a start date and the registration application have to line up.

Where Do Associates Get Hired in California?

Associates are hired in two kinds of settings that the Board treats differently. Exempt settings are "a governmental entity, a school, a college, a university, or an institution that is both nonprofit and charitable," and every other setting is nonexempt, including private practices and professional corporations. Associates can work in both, but a private practice or professional corporation may employ an associate only after the registration number is issued, and never on a subsequent registration.

Medi-Cal's public mental health system can use associates as providers. Under Medi-Cal, each county's mental health plan "is responsible for providing or arranging for the provision of Specialty Mental Health Services," and California's Medicaid State Plan lists "a licensed, waivered or registered marriage and family therapist" among the providers of those services. The State Plan defines a registered therapist as a candidate for licensure who is registered with the licensing board, or who has applied and is in the process of registering, to gain the experience required for licensure. County mental health departments and the agencies that deliver services for them can therefore staff those programs with associates, which makes them a first place to look.

Which Other Settings Hire Associates?

Community clinics, schools, group practices and hospitals are other places to search, each with its own rules. Licensed marriage and family therapists have been billable Medi-Cal providers at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Rural Health Clinics since January 1, 2018. A December 2024 notice from the Department of Health Care Services, proposing a change to the State Plan, describes FQHC visits that include services from "certain associate behavioral health practitioners under the supervision of a licensed behavioral health provider," without naming AMFTs, so ask each clinic whether it employs associates.

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing says local education agencies employ marriage and family therapists "to provide services that are not authorized by credentials," and that contracted or otherwise legally authorized mental health services in schools must be supervised by a holder of a Pupil Personnel Services credential. A position whose duties align with that credential, such as school counseling, requires the credential itself, so ask each district which positions it fills with associates.

Group practices can employ associates who already hold a registration, with a supervisor who is employed or contracted by the practice or is an owner of it. Hospitals are a work setting for marriage and family therapists nationally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

National figures on demand for marriage and family therapists are in the guide to MFT job growth and demand in California. They count the whole profession, licensed therapists included, and do not measure associate openings.

What Will Employers Check Before Hiring You?

Employers check your registration status first. If you already hold an AMFT number, they can look it up in the Board's "Verify a License" search; if you are a new graduate whose number has not arrived, they need to know whether you can start under the 90-day rule. Before the number is issued, you may work in a setting that is not a private practice or professional corporation, and your post-degree hours count only if the Board received your application within 90 days of your degree date, your employer required Live Scan fingerprinting before you earned the hours, and the Board then grants the registration. That Live Scan is separate from the one for your registration application, and each employer needs its own.

Employment status comes next. The Board allows associates to work only as W-2 employees or as volunteers, so independent contracting is ruled out, and an associate may be paid only by the employer and may receive no payment from clients. Opening your own practice before licensure is ruled out too, because the Board treats independent practice before licensure as unlicensed practice. AMFT employment rules in California covers W-2 and 1099 status, private practice and advertising in detail.

Supervision is the third check. Associates must be under supervision at all times, and every week for which you claim hours must include at least one hour of direct supervisor contact in each work setting, plus one more hour in any week you provide more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling in that setting. The supervisor can be on the employer's staff or outside it. When the supervisor is not employed by your employer or is a volunteer, the Board requires a written oversight agreement between the supervisor and the employer, signed before supervision begins, and in nonexempt settings a supervisor may act as individual or triadic supervisor for no more than six people in total.

When Should You Start Looking for an AMFT Job?

Start in your final semester, so that a job offer, the employer's Live Scan and your registration application can line up with your degree date. The 90-day period runs from the date your degree is awarded to the day the Board receives your application, and the Board recommends requesting transcripts and degree program certifications no earlier than two weeks before you submit. Complete AMFT applications took an average of 15 calendar days to process in the first half of 2026; BBS processing times has the Board's figures for each quarter.

Your practicum site is a natural first place to ask. A trainee who stays at the same agency after graduating can keep working there, and the Live Scan part of the 90-day rule then applies: the agency must fingerprint you before you earn post-degree hours if you want those hours to count before your registration is issued. The Live Scan requirement does not apply to pre-degree trainee hours.

Private practices and professional corporations have to wait for your number. A graduate may not work or volunteer in either until the Board issues the registration, so the start date of a group practice offer depends on Board processing.

What Questions Should You Ask Before Accepting an Offer?

Ask questions that confirm the job will produce hours the Board can count. Each of these tests a Board rule:

  • Will I be a W-2 employee or a volunteer, and will all of my pay come from the employer?
  • Who will supervise me, is that person employed by this organization, and if not, will a written oversight agreement be signed before supervision begins?
  • Will I receive at least one hour of direct supervisor contact every week, and an additional hour in weeks when I provide more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling?
  • How many hours of direct clinical counseling will I provide each week, and will some of them be with couples, families and children? The Board requires at least 1,750 hours of direct clinical counseling for licensure, including at least 500 with couples, families and children.
  • Will you require Live Scan fingerprinting before my first day, so that hours earned before my registration is issued can count?
  • Is this setting a private practice or professional corporation? If it is, my start date has to wait until my registration is issued.

Compliance is only part of the decision. Judging a position by the quality of its clinical work and supervision is covered in AMFT registration in California: your first steps after graduating.

A Closer Look at One Program: The Sentio MFT Program

Programs differ in how much supervised clinical work students complete before they look for an associate position. In the Sentio MFT program, every student has a guaranteed practicum at the Sentio Counseling Center, an online counseling center that serves diverse, low-income clients and specializes in serving clients with trauma. Students begin seeing clients in their second semester, complete more than 400 supervised clinical hours before graduating, and have supervisors who review video of their sessions.

The program's first graduating class, the Class of 2026, finished in May 2026: 100% of its graduates were registered as Associate Marriage and Family Therapists within six weeks of graduation, and 100% were working in the field within three months. The program is a 20-month, 60-credit Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy taught in weekly live online classes, with a short in-person residency in Los Angeles at the start of each semester. It also runs a job board for employers.

Making Your Decision

A first AMFT job shapes the path to licensure, because the hours you earn there count only if the job meets the Board's rules on employment, supervision and setting. In your final semester, list the settings you would consider, ask your practicum site whether it hires associates, and prepare your registration application so the Board receives it within 90 days of your degree date. When an offer arrives, confirm the employment terms, the supervisor and the Live Scan before you accept. For questions about pay, see what therapists earn before licensure in California.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my first AMFT job in California?

Start in your final semester by looking at the settings open to associates: county mental health departments and the agencies that provide services for them, community clinics and health centers, schools, nonprofit agencies and group practices. Ask whether your practicum site hires associates. Before you accept an offer, confirm that you will be a W-2 employee or a volunteer, that a qualifying supervisor is in place, and that the employer will have you complete Live Scan fingerprinting before you start, so your post-degree hours can count under the 90-day rule.

Can I work as an associate before my AMFT number is issued?

Yes, outside private practice. Before your number is issued, you may work in a setting that is not a private practice or professional corporation, as long as you comply with the 90-day rule: the Board must receive your application within 90 days of your degree date, your employer must require Live Scan fingerprinting before you earn hours, and the Board must then grant the registration for those hours to count. Private practices and professional corporations may employ you only after your registration is issued.

Can I keep working at my practicum site after I graduate?

Yes, if the site hires you and the Board's rules are met. The Live Scan part of the 90-day rule does not apply to pre-degree trainee hours, but if you stay at the same agency after graduating and want your post-degree hours to count before your registration is issued, the agency must fingerprint you through Live Scan before you earn those hours. Each employer needs its own Live Scan, so a second job requires a second one.

Do AMFT employers have to provide supervision?

Every associate must be supervised at all times, and every week for which hours are credited must include at least one hour of direct supervisor contact in each work setting, plus one more hour in weeks with more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling in that setting. The supervisor can be on the employer's staff or outside it. When the supervisor is not employed by your employer or is a volunteer, the Board requires a written oversight agreement between the supervisor and the employer before supervision begins.

Can AMFTs work in schools in California?

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing says school districts employ marriage and family therapists to provide mental health services that credentials do not authorize, and that this work must be supervised by a holder of a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential. A position whose duties align with a PPS credential, such as school counseling, requires the credential itself, and a marriage and family therapy license or registration does not substitute for it. Ask each district which positions it fills with associates.

When should I start applying for AMFT jobs?

Start during your final semester. Your post-degree hours can count from the start only if the Board receives your registration application within 90 days of your degree award date and your employer requires Live Scan fingerprinting before you begin, so an offer, a start date and your application should line up around graduation. The Board recommends requesting transcripts and degree program certifications no earlier than two weeks before you submit your application.
